Buying guide: Headrests

Active head restraints, which move forward in a rear impact, are listed with their mechanism and cannot be mixed with a passive restraint.

Guides and clips are the most frequently replaced items in this group: they crack, the headrest starts to rattle or drop on its own, and the plastic sleeve no longer holds the detent. The restraint itself is usually replaced after a collision repair, after the covering has been damaged, or when a rear-seat entertainment screen mounted to it has been removed and left holes behind.

Match the restraint to the seat, not just to the model. Head restraints differ between the front and rear rows, between the outer and centre rear positions, and between trim levels with and without a folding mechanism. Two posts and two slots look identical until you measure the spacing.
